Benedict calls us first of all to listen with open mind and heart, to God’s word. This word is spoken in a special way in the scriptures, but also in people, in events, and in our own being. The Word of God has become flesh in Jesus Christ, and now shares our whole human experience from within. All of it, therefore , can be part of his word to us and the place where we meet him.
To accept ourselves and other people lovingly as they are, is to accept him. His word judges us and shows us up, but in judging it can cleanse and create.
Our readiness to listen, therefore, is the measure of our willingness to grow in the truth and in love of Christ. — Maria Boulding OSB
